I like your piece Bruce. Positive approach to the situation.

I, myself, remain doubtful as to our (IM) ability to apply the assessment you speak to the volume stocked piled. Average email number 50,000 per senior level bureaucrat as seen by their numerous pst archives. But...

.... we need voices like yours to keep thinking of ways and means to approach this situation. Thanks for sharing your blog.

Thanks Trevor, it is a complicated and complex issue!

I agree that we need real behind-the-scenes business rules that do work for staff, rather than more unenforceable policy. And I agree that the real focus should be on developing better methods to deal with large volumes of raw materials (and not just irrational binge and purge practices like many IT shops give in to).

Perhaps from the RM perspective it's worth looking at fields like microbiology and seeing if there's any way to mimic how they track the transmission of strains of microbes starting from the origin/birth/ground zero. Certainly information and bits of content are nearly as prolific and mutable.

Perhaps from the Archival perspective it's worth looking at fields like mining and seeing if there's a way to mimic how they extract/refine high-value minerals. Rather than forcing masses of office workers to touch every bit of "rock" to find ore and "minerals".

And of course this sort of investigation and mimicry should be done from a capitalist R&D perspective to get an easy and repeatable process to market, one that hides the hard thinking under some glossy easy buttons.

More automated metadata that's more durable across changing formats and environments sounds good to me!

In my experience and not unseasoned view, there is more effort wasted trying to defining content as transitory and convey what that means than would be required to recognized the business function that transitory records support and schedule accordingly.
